Fallen Warrior

Several years ago Ynda Silverwind, servant of Aalat, Lord of Air, left her temple on a matter on some importance. A paladin traveled with the priestess as protection. The arrogant cleric felt the warrior was unnecessary. She didn't even bother to remember his name when introduced. The human paladin took the events in stride. Despite his youth compared to the long lived elven priestess, he had a wisdom learned from experience not books.

The journey had been uneventful until they reached the Towering Forests. The Towering Forests are an impressive sight. The largest trees in the world grow in this forest. The first explorers who viewed the forest believed they had entered the land of giants. Giants do live in the area but not in homes constructed by the enormous trees as imagined by the explorers. Forest giants live in the woods itself. When not moving distinguishing a forest giant from a tree is near impossible.

Ynda and her companion had never heard of the forest giants. The treant slammed the surprised paladin aside with a huge tree branch of an arm. Normally peaceful, no leaves grew on the forest giant giving it a sick look. Ynda backed away unsure how to handle such a massive creature. Her guardian quickly returned to his feat and charged the beast. His sword sliced into the thick trunk of a leg but the treant barely seemed to noticed. Ynda prayed to aid her warrior but another tree branch crashed into her interrupting the spell.

The priest could tell the battle was not going well. The forest pounded the lone paladin.

"Burn it," yelled the embattled warrior.

"Get back and I'll...," started Ynda before being interrupted.

"No! Burn it now!" screamed the warrior never looking away from his opponent.

Ynda called down a pillar of fire. The wooden beast screamed in agony and fell with a booming crash. The elf rushed forward and pulled the paladin away from the fire. He was already gone. Tears welled up in the cleric's eyes. Aalat had not yet blessed her with the ability to raise the dead. She knew she had to bring his body back with her but he was far to heavy for her to carry.

Ynda apologized for never having learned the paladin name and promised to remedy that mistake. She petitioned Aalat to grant her the strength the carry the fallen soldier. The paladin's body began to stir surprising Ynda. Standing up the paladin seemed to wait expectantly. Staring into his eyes, the cleric found only a vacant stare.

Ynda stepped back several paces. Hesitantly the elf commanded the zombie. "Come."

Upon hearing the command the zombie shambled forward. Ynda had to resist backing away from her former companion. "I'm sorry... I pray that you will forgive me for this desecration," whispered the priestess. The cleric set forth once more along the path with her undead guardian following close behind.

A couple of hours away from Ganor, a group of adventurers spotted the priest and undead minion. The band quickly moved in to defeat what they assumed to be a necromancer. The party's wizard silenced Ynda with magic to prevent her from using magic. Ynda tried to signal them to stop. A priest of Kasman quickly destroyed the zombie turning the body to dust. Silenced Ynda's scream went unheard but her collapse startled the party. Recognizing the floating leaf symbol on her amulet, the disciple of Kasman had the wizard cancel the magical silence.

Between the tears, Ynda explained her situation. It didn't matter for the damage was done. The fallen paladin would not be returned to life. She would never have his forgiveness nor would he tell her his name.

Quall and the Frantigolus Mystery

Scene opens on the evening of the first of Xantis - the first night of the full moon.
Torzzag has become a fixture at the Pale Pony when they don't have their "open mic" nights for local talent. Taking a break during his performance, he meets a future patron in the street by the name of Antonius Bailer. They exchange a quick chat and then head inside where Torzzag introduces Antonius to the barkeep - Lyanna. Torzzag notes that his robes are covered in dirt - but he writes it off that he probably has been traveling for the better part of the day on dusty roads.
During the performance a half-orc patron leaves with great fanfare (because no one wants to tangle with his drunken self) and in the bustle drops a sheet of parchment near the table where a human and an elf share a meal and drinks. The human picks up the paper and holds it quietly. The half-orc drops a tip in Torzzag's cup and heads on out.
After the performance, Torzzag performs his usual ritual of chatting with the customers and in particular with the elf and human (as they are new to Quall and haven't heard his stories yet and because the elf indicated to Lyanna that she wanted to have a word with him). The human reveals the sheet of parchment which reveals an odd bit of information:
It is with great risk that I place this message in unsure hands - but it is the
only method I could find to reach you. I pray that it reaches you in good health
and high spirits.
To the north of Quall - at the base of Mount Thornspire -
you should find a door that is not a door just as the essence of Karan breeches
the western horizon. This is the entrance which you seek and within is your
prize. I do not know what else might be within - but to be sure - caution should
rule your priorities.
Be safe and travel light. Oh and before you leave that
blasted bar - drop a gold piece in Torzzag's tips.
May Gruntamere bless you
with great fortune in your search.
The letter bears the wizard mark of Frantigolus - though none present have heard of such an individual. Looking through his tips - Torzzag indeed finds a gold piece among the coppers.
Just after finishing the reading of the note, a local farmer's son bursts in through the door. He proclaims, "Lyanna - come quick. Someone's dead out here! I'm off to fetch the sheriff." and leaves as suddenly as he arrives. Everyone still in the bar area - Torzzag, the elf and human, Antonius and Lyanna all go outside to investigate. The half-orc patron, the one with the note, is dead on the ground not far from the inn - blood-drained and welts covering his exposed skin.
Antonius, discreetly, makes his way towards the body to get a closer look, but is shoved mercilessly away as the sheriff and his 2 deputies arrive. "Break it up people - there's nothing to be done here - go and get yourselves some sleep." The sheriff looks over at the unfamiliar faces of the patrons that are not townsfolk and adds, "Just in case though - no one leaves town without talking to me first." He directs one of his deputies to get the names of the strangers and then directs his attention to the body itself.
The deputy keeps the players grouped up until the sheriff is ready to talk with them - and other then brief introductions to the others - they keep relatively silent. The sheriff brings them back to the prison but lets them go after Lyanna and Torzzag speak up (though more on accord of Lyanna than of Torzzag).
Discussing the letter with Lyanna, they are all still unsure of the half-orc's origins or of the mystery of Frantigolus. Intent on finding out more about the matter, Torzzag suggests they go after whatever is alluded to in the message in the hopes of finding out more. The elf (Vestele Siannodel) and the human (a druid - Zelos Wilder) both agree to come along and Antonius is happy to go along - since he knows no one, is short on cash and hoping to find new friends. He does warn them that he has to "do something" before they get too far out of town, but assures them that it is necessary and will be helpful.
In the morning, there's a bit of a buzz about the town for the half-orc's death, but otherwise, things seem to have returned to normal for the small farming hamlet. Torzzag and the others follow Antonius to a spot outside of town marked with a simple shovel. As Antonius shovels away the loose dirt, he explains to the others that he has a helper - a bone golem as it were - to help him out with carrying things and to keep him safe. Wary of the skeleton as it emerges, Zelos and his dog, Nanook, both take a step back at the sight of it. Antonius, good with words, convinces them that he is a good soul - but his helper is not always met with like goodness - so he tends to keep him hidden when possible.
Torzzag diffuses the situation with an anecdote about his goblin tribe and soon the unlikely group are heading north towards Mount Thornspire.
The two day trip to Mount Thornspire proved uneventful and when they reached the base of the mountain - they didn't have to wait long for Karan to show the "door" - actually an open pit hidden with a clever illusion. Nanook and Zelos ended up taking a tumble inside - a chute that dumped them into a strange foyer complete with an illusionary butler who seemed mistaken about the intruders' identities: "Welcome home Lord Dewista. I hope your journey was well spent. You should find your bed made and dinner will be along shortly."
After Zelos is sure he isn't going to be attacked by the statue on which the illusion appeared, the others looked for a method to get him out. Despite their efforts and resources, they didn't find a route - but Torzzag offered that perhaps another exit would be found - as the location was clearly a home to this Lord Dewista - and no self-respecting lord would not have a second route of escape from his own home. Forging on - everyone took their turn down the slide.
The home itself was simply kept but in obvious misuse after many years of neglect. Doors appeared heavily worn and battered (as if by claws or teeth), the sparse furniture left in tatters. Soon, the smell of food was on the way - and while exploring - a small troupe of spiders came in for the feeding. Zelos and Nanook proved their worth quickly as they each stomped a spider down; even Antonius's companion squashed a spider handily.
Following the route from which the spiders came - the group found a veritable nest of them - including a couple of larger spiders that proved very difficult to take down. Here, Torzagg and Vestele were able to shine and when things even started to look grim, Nanook was there to quell the anxiety. All told - they managed to best a pair of the larger spiders and 8 of the smaller ones. They quickly burned out any of the remaining eggsacks to ensure that the spider threat would stay away.
The spiders had actually taken residence in the bedroom - and while the furniture was oppulent - it also betrayed a sense of simplicity and function over form. Like the sitting room though, the bed and furniture were in bad repair.
Following their nose, the party came across a pair of hobgoblins - and by came across - Antonius's skeleton nearly met a mace to the ribs! Torzzag, seeing fellow goblinoids - worked his words to diffuse the situation and the pair revealed that they were outcasts of their hometribe and had fallen down the chute as the others had. They had decided to live on in the home until such a time that the spiders were a true threat - which the party had so conveniently dispatched for them. They agreed to show the others the way out if the party were so kind as to remove the last guardian in the home - a pair of statuelike creatures located in a storage room. The party, looking to regain the freedom of the outdoors, agreed and walked on over.
The storage room was preceded by another hobgoblin - though this one was long dead and rotting. Inside, they watched the pair of wooden statues go about their business of "tidying" the room. Something about them wasn't right however, for all their cleaning - they only jumbled things even more. At the first threat though, the statues attacked the party fiercely! After a minute though, with the swinging staff at the hands of Antonius's skeleton enhanced by Zelos's magic - the two statues crumbled to pieces.
Within the storage room, the party discovered a bit of treasure and a strange, polished bone key. They took it all and started on their way out - only to be waylaid by the pair of hobgoblins. Apparently enboldened by the party's recent scuffles, they had decided they might be able to take them down and walk away rich with their possessions. A burning hands spell covered the lead members of the party - but didn't deal enough to take anyone down. Before the hobgoblins could do anything else though, Nanook and the skeleton had taken them to the ground.
After the hobgoblins' defeat, Torzzag lamented about the goblinoid races - he cursed these two for proving once again that goblinoids cannot be trusted to the rest of the world - a fact he hated his own tribe for. The others busied themselves over the key but it betrayed nothing of its purpose.

Party Composition:
Torzzag (Dennis) - Goblin Bard 1
Antonius Bailer (Tim) - Human Necromancer (UA variant) 1
-- Skeletal Minion
Zelos Wilder (Dewey) - Human Druid 1
-- Nanook, Riding Dog Animal Companion

Fire Wormz Tribe

The Fire Wormz tribe is a small goblin tribe northwest of Quall. They live in a series of caves found in the rocky hills a little over a day away. Usually the tribe numbers around twenty five to thirty but has sometimes spiked as high as fifty. They generally don't cause much trouble for the town although they sometimes attack lightly defended travellers. Attempts to wiped out the tribe has been less than successful as they are adept at hiding in the numerous caverns. Not much was know about them until Torrzag's appearance. He happily regaled audiences with his tribes tales.

"Long before the goblins lived in the city of Arrganz at the foot of a mighty mountain in what is now known as the Fire Mountains. Ogres ruled the city. They indulged in any desire without thought of consequences. If food supplies ran low in winter they thought nothing of letting the goblins starve or even cooking them to quench their hunger. Their superior strength forced the goblins to submit to their every will. The foolish Ogres thought they were the ultimate race.

Unbenounced to anyone, the great Fire Worm lived beneath the earth. Awakened from it's slumbered, it listened to the surface dwellers and was not pleased. In a fit of anger several mountains exploded in fire. The life giving sun vanished behind a cloud of ash and smoke. Liquid fire poured forth from the mighty mountain destroying all in it's path.

The large arrogant brutes panicked. They ran in every direction. Stupidly trying to grab their valuables without regard to others. Ogres trapped underneath fallen debris were left for dead. Gold and gems were saved only to have the owner die later due to starvation. The king stood defiantly before the liquid fire expecting to simply push the opponent aside with his mythic shield. Sight of the burning king caused more than one Ogre to drop everything and flee.

Despite all the surrounding chaos, the goblins stood together. The first great king, Nartax, organized my people. One group set off to acquire food supplies. Another gathered materials for shelter and warmth. The last group secured weapons for the tribe's protection and hunting. Meeting up on the southwest side, they abandoned the cursed city.

The great Fire Worm observed the destruction of Arrganz. Seeing the smallest folk's resolve while the giants panicked impressed the God. The earth opened up before King Nartax. The great Fire Worm rose below. Most fell to their hands and knees before the God but the King merely bowed his head. Rangmun, the first to prostrate in veneration to the God, stepped forward. As the first prime servant, he would speak for the Fire Worm. In return for continued adoration, the Fire Worm ensured their safety. Since that day the Fire Wormz tribe has never submitted to another mortal."

King Gok currently rules. Intelligence is not Gok's best attribute. Strength forms the basis of his rule. The line of succession is chosen by the King and usually includes a son. Torrzag held a respectable level of social standing until recently. The King's inability to envision life beyond the present existence brought Torrzag into conflict with him.

The king's friend, Mersit, occupies the position of prime servant to the Fire Worm. Torrzag's knowledge on the worship of the Fire Worm is limited. Every year a trip to the volcano that destroyed Arrganz is made to give a sacrifice. Usually the sacrifice is an animal or some objects. Torrzag is unsure why a particular date is chosen for the sacrifice. It is usually during a hottest period of the summer. The contingent sent to perform the sacrifice isn't even consistent and may very in size and who is sent. Torrzag sometimes think the prime servant just makes it up to appear important. Overall he doesn't seem to have a high opinion of the clergy.

The tribe typically survives on mushrooms and small game. Occasionally they will take down larger prey but that is more commonly done for feasts. Raiding travellers account for most of their possessions. Loot is distributed based on kills so aiding others accounts for nothing. Torrzag seems to resent that model. Mariage seems very usual to the goblin bard. The strongest male goblin chose who they will mate with. Usually they take several women although sometimes a woman is willing to accept other mates on the side. Since Torrzag came to town the Fire Wormz tribe has engaged in some trade with Quall. With Torrzag's apparent falling out it is unsure if this will continue.

The Hamlet of Quall

Here's a small version of the town map. I haven't decided how much is going to be known by the bulk of you - but Torzzag will certainly know more than most of the rest of you.

How you all met

Okay - here's the start of where we can "get to know" the characters and how they met up. I'm writing in some background here that will hopefully help get things moving along, and since Torzzag (Dennis) is the closest to a "local" in Quall - this setup involves him as the centerpoint.

Notes from Torzzag's Journal
5 Edund 1002, Sunday (Karan at no-moon)
A cold, biting rain has drenched Quall and the surrounding area. This is good for the late season crops I'm sure, but it is also good for me - since it means many of the farmers will be coming into the Pale Pony tonight.
Lyanna and I have taken to conversations about her father when time permits. She misses him greatly, but I am sure the conversation helps.
This morning I received an ill-greeting by one of the Tolad children - a ball of mud tossed at me that struck me across the face. Retaliating would have been worth it - but his mother was quick to scold him and usher him away - so I let the issue drop.
Last night, a half-orc passing through Quall happened to enjoy my performance well enough to leave an entire gold piece as a tip. When most of my tips come in the form of various coppers, this is a welcome addition to my wallet. The half-orc left this morning, so I probably won't be seeing that kind of money again anytime soon.
18 Edund 1002, Starday (Karan at almost half-moon)
The rain of two-weeks past is all but gone and has been followed by a delightful few days of warmer weather. Again - this has helped the local crops from what I have seen, but more importantly, more merchants have been coming through the area for their last venture before the frosts of the winter.
This morning, I made acquaintance with the sheriff, Robert Salters. A unpleasant man, it appears the rumors of his corruption are true. Just in the moment of our meeting, he was greeted by a son of the Altarians with a small bag of coin. The exchange was little more than a hand-off and I was good to avert my eyes to feign ignorance. Best to be staying on his good side or at least outside of his notice. Tough to do since I am the only goblin in town... Our conversation was limited though, and was abruptly interrupted when his deputies came running up with a matter to call his attention.
Locals in the tavern are getting too accustomed to me performing though, and even though there are ample-enough singers and performers to keep the variety up - I seem to be garnering the smallest share of tips on my performing nights.
[End of notes]

Here's the start of things and how I am planning on setting it up. If any of you have specific changes, let me know - because little of this is written in stone.

30 Edund 1002, Earthday (Karan at almost full)
Weather: Cloudless and sunny, cool, brisk Fall day.
Characters: Torzzag, the goblin bard; Zelos Wilder, the human druid;
Scene: Zelos arrives in Quall just after midday, coming from his forced eviction from his homeland. Torzzag, as he customarily does, meets newcomers to gather new stories, legends and information for his own use in story, song or personal gain.

1 Xantis 1002, Freeday (Karan at first day of full moon)
Weather: slightly cloudy and mostly sunny. Cool, brisk Fall day.
Characters: Torzzag; Zelos; (doug), the half-orc barbarian; (renee) , Vestele Siannodel, the moon elf battle sorcerer; (tim), the human necromancer
Scene: Zelos stays overnight at the Pale Pony, Vestele arrives at midday, having heard of a goblin bard in these parts and is curious; (tim) arrives after nightfall - just before the action of the campaign starts (Torzzag is performing at the Pale Pony on this night)
(doug) and (renee) are unknown quantities - will have to write them in here somewhere. is not the half-orc mentioned in Torzzag's notes above.

General Serthen Info

Here's some of the more useful, boring information I will be using throughout the campaign. This is just basic Calendar information. For the most part - the calendar is irrelevant unless you guys actually want to use it (and is only for my purposes of the history of my world.

Calendar
Spring
Althair (30 days)
Defcall (30 days)
Sarthem (30 days)

Summer
Rayven (40 days)
Falts (30 days)
Guthal (30 days)
Vendes (30 days)

Fall
Zantis (40 days)
Fendet (30 days)
Edund (30 days)
Xantis (40 days)

Winter
Walthic (30 days)
Janitus (30 days)
Perthair (30 days)

Days of the Week: Sunday (Sunday), Moonday (Monday), Godsday (Tuesday), Waterday (Wednesday), Earthday (Thursday), Freeday (Friday), Starday (Saturday). Pretty much the week works out as a modern day week. Most of the "upper class" takes Starday and Sunday as days off from work; for most of the rest of the world, they take one or two days off here and there when it is reasonable to do so.

Serthen has one moon (Karan) which has 52 days between the first days of its full moon. The campaign is starting on the date of 1 Xantis 1002 (Freeday). Karan is entering the first day of a full moon.

As said elsewhere, Quall is located in a location that is between a temperate and arctic climate. So while the summers are reasonably warm, the winters are fairly cold and snowy. Picture Northern Canada if you like (though this location is in the southern hemisphere in Serthen).

Just the Facts

Okay - I've decided to use this space for both informational purposes and to roleplay between adventures when needed. If the format turns out to be ineffective - and another format is desired - let me know. I'm just using what I know (which admittedly is not very much when it comes to blogs...)

Anyway - the first adventure is scheduled for Friday, November 9th. I hope all of you can make it - but if not we can reschedule if needed.

I'm still waiting on the specifics of all of the character concepts, but if I get them all in time - I would like to start off the group introduction here until the action really starts (so we don't have to have a huge amount of exposition at the start). Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do without character backgrounds and reasons to be at the starting location.

If I am particularly ambitious, I might also use this blog to give a more narrative story of the adventure as it unfolds. We'll see if I get the time for it though.

In the next post, I'll include the general information about the town you'll be starting in as well as a relatively worthless map to reference...
